I know it sounds like something that is typical but I really do love this album. The different elements, instruments and musical influences all bind together to form a sweet musical treat. This album has brought sexy back to rock and roll, and it was needed! Queen of Spades is my favourite off the album.

I have been listening to this album constantly since I purchased it. The music is intricate and uplifting in the most meaningful way. I especially appreciate the darker songs, such as “The Pyre,” “The Cobra,” and “The Ground Cries Out,” as well as other equally mystical, spiritual songs such as “One Star in Sight” and “Santeria.” I also love the instrumental pieces. In short, this is a wonderful album!

I saw The Tea Party for the first time in August 1993, then promptly went to the record shop the next morning to buy Splendor Solis. When I listened to it, it blew my mind how they were able to produce all of those sounds with just three musician on stage.

Every album afterwards, I’ve picked up on it’s street date and couldn’t wait to listen to it over and over again so I’d know the material front to back, and then see it pulled off live at the next show.

This trend however changed with The Ground Cries Out. I purchased the album right away, but this time, kept it in it’s wrapping. I caught the show last night in Hamilton, ON without any prior knowlege of the songs. Jeff still posesses the ability to fill a room with magic regardless of being solo or with others.

When listening to the album, I now have visual imagery of Jeff getting his “rock n’ roll yeah-yeah’s” out. It’s kind of like Transmission where Interzone Mantras left off. Keep up the good work!!!

The mark of a good album to me is playability & The Ground Cries Out scores top marks for that. It’s palette includes; blues, metal, classic rock, ballad, instrumentals, Gothic/emo, ethnic flavour (was that Moroccan lamb I tasted?)& a shake of the voodoo majick stick for good measure.
Having sold his soul to rock’n'roll at the crossroads, cursed (blessed?) to tour this earth forever with 777 burnt into his Les Paul, Jeff Msrtin, along with 2 psychopomps dig themselves out of the pet semetary. The ground cries out… for more!!!

    My opinion:

This album is a good “FIRST” album.

The Good – I”ll listen to them over and over—-

The Cobra: This is the “feel good” song( in a very dark sense) that most of the ppl who listened to JM can relate to.

    The Pyre:
I”m glad this is in the album; wish it was a little more dark. This goes back a little with so much variation in tempo. Loved how Jeff’s has sung in this song :)

Queen of Spades – enjoyed listening to this; again, very different – blues influenced..

JM – you might turn the darkness to light..maybe you are the tunnel??

The Ground cries out: The live version was better.. Still like the song..

1916 – something very different from what JM has done before – very rock and roll feel good song – enjoyed listening to it.

Santeria – if it wasn’t for the catchy tune; it would have made it in the “bad” section. It’s an alright song.

The BAd – Didn’t care for them

A few of the songs were just bland; didn’t care for these songs at all. The music didn’t speak to me..and if the music doesn’t speak to me then the lyrics (however deep) just cannot. Like –

    She’s Leaving
    One Star in sight

The Ugly – LIke a stagnant water

Blue Mountain Sun – What was THAT?

Instrumental music usually makes you fly and takes you on a mystical journey. This one didn’t even take off. I’m not a musician; but I know when something is off – and this one was off for me.

Maybe it was a good starting point..but it needed to go somewhere… Some of the parts seemed like were on “repeat”. Sorry.

    The Mekong:

Okay – I liked the way it started. Either it lost me somewhere or I got lost somewhere. I appreciate the sentiments that went behind in creating this..but when I started listening to this – i expected MORE in a 3 minute instrumental song?

    On another note –
They sound much better LIVE; and when I heard the album – it just didn’t do the justice to the music that I heard live.
